the empathy ecosystem

the empathy ecosystem is a new model for radical planetary empathy, tracing the ecological, economic and social role of empathy in all human and non-human life. an organic system that is alive and in continuous motion, the model adopts different forms to explore different perspectives - in this example those of an individual human and of a tree.

part of a growing body of research and knowledge into interspecies empathy, the empathy ecosystem presents a new systemic approach to understanding radical planetary empathy, creating a tangible and practical tool to invite us to re-examine + redefine our relationship with ourselves, each other, and our natural environment.

much like the empathy ecosystem itself, the design of the model is alive and evolving through my ongoing research and experimentation. this first edition of the empathy ecosystem was first exhibited at the design museum in london in 2021 as a part of my residency at the museum. graphic design of the model was created in collaboration with alessia arcuri.
